Using Electric Heat to Invite Warmth Into Winter Cabins

Mike and Julie from Minnesota recently installed Cadet electric heaters to provide heat in their winter cabin, which was previously heated by a central fireplace. The electric heaters were easy to install and didn't require extensive remodels of the home. Mike and Julie spent the past few years looking for a solution to bring reliable heat into their two Minnesota cabins.

One cabin, which Mike and Julie use in the winter, had a fireplace as the only source of heat. The other, which is used April through November, had no heat source.

“It’s been such a stumbling block for the past few years — how to heat this place without spending a lot of money,” Julie said.

Home heating options

Adding ductwork really wasn’t an option because of the way the cabins and additions were built. They also looked at ductless mini splits but those would take up a lot of the cabin’s limited wall space, Julie said.

“We wanted to have a good way to heat the cabin without having to do a major overhaul of the place to accommodate a furnace and ducts,” she explained.

They also tried plug-in space heaters.

“They just didn’t cut it,” she said. “If you sat right in front of them it was nice” but they never heated the entire room.

Mike and Julie use wall heaters to provide heat in rooms with limited wall space.

Heating solution

After a long search, Mike and Julie finally heard about baseboard and wall heaters from a friend. After a quick trip to Menards, they returned with two baseboards to install.

After Mike installed the two heaters, he was sold on the process and picked up enough to heat both cabins.

The heaters checked off all of their boxes:

  • They're easy to install.
  • Don’t require any major changes to the home.
  • Don't take up much wall space.
  • They provide a reliable source of heat in each individual room.
One of Mike and Julie's Minnesota lake cabins uses a combination of electric baseboard and wall heaters as the primary heat source.

Over the winter the Mike and Julie reported the temperature was -17° F outside. Inside, the cabin was in the upper 60s.

“The heaters worked great,” Julie said. “Everyone was comfortable and we didn’t have to get up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire.”

Mike and Julie think so highly of the Cadet heaters that — without talking with each other — they both went to cadetheat.com within 24-hours of each other and left glowing reviews of the products.

“We’re extremely happy with them,” she said. “I can’t say it enough.”
