The competition at this year's Hood to Coast Relay is heating up. We're sending a team of 12 -- ranging from office staff to warehouse workers -- to the annual relay this weekend. The 199-mile race starts Friday morning at Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood and ends sometime Saturday afternoon in Seaside, Oregon. There are expected to be 12,600 runners and 3,600 volunteers at this year's event. We're calling our team "The Hot Ones" after our popular garage heater. We're proud our employees have taken the time to train for this strenuous physical event and are representing us in the local community. Here are a few highlights about our team: Our team captain, Javier Aguilar (Maintenance), made a proposal to the executive team last year to have our company sponsor a team. The execs loved the idea as it fits in with our wellness initiative at the company. Brandon Borschel (Sales) and Jonathan Kaylor (Customer Service) are van captains. Other runners are: Jose Chavez (Production), Mario Oxte (Production) Shane Mongelli (Fabrication), Darla Rosser (Risk Management/QA), Mike Sherman (Fabrication), Michael Dean (Fabrication), Jamie Koenig (HR), Dragos Craciun (Engineering) and Beth Twardoch, the wife of our Director of Operations. A few others stepped up to help make this possible: Bob Brown, (Sales), and Steve Capuano (Lean Champion) volunteered to drive the two vans that will shuttle runners between checkpoints. Trisha Zufelt (Customers Service), Stacy Glass (Sales), and LeAnn Reader (CFO/Operations) are also volunteering. We'll be sharing updates throughout the week and during the race on Facebook
And because it's Tuesday, we asked the team to send in recommendations for "Tuesday Tip Jar." Here are a few of the highlights: Shane Mongelli (Fabrication) said he tries to "roll out" his muscles before and after runs to help speed up recover time. He uses a Tiger Tail 18" roller. Darla Rosser (Risk Management/QA) suggests using electronic fitness accessories to track time, heart rate, calories burned, distance, pace and other data during training runs. Seeing the calories burn is a good motivator too, she said. Michael Dean (Fabrication) says to make sure you are hydrated, eat enough fuel/carbs and stay positive while running. The team from Van 1 suggests people train for events, pace themselves, stay positive and try to have a good time. Good luck runners.
